This is a Divya Desam (No. 20).
Along with Veera Narasimha Perumal temple and Neela Mega Perumal temple, Mani Kundra Perumal temple is considered as a Divya Desam.
All the three temples are located close to each other on the banks of River Cauvery at Vennatrankarai, Tanjore.
During the Kritha Yuga, three demons named Thanjakan, Gajamukan, and Thandakan were troubling Sage Parasara.
As requested by Lord Shiva, Lord Narayanan killed Thanjakan. Hence, the place is known as Thanjavoor.
Then, as Veera Narasimha Perumal, He destroyed the other two demons.
After the destruction of the three demons, Lord appeared before Sage Parasara as Neelamega Perumal.
