It is a wonder that while water level is far deep as 150 feet down in the wells of farm land and in houses, it is just 8 feet down in the temple.

        Sthala Puran

It is noteworthy that the cleanliness and maintenance of the temple is a model for other temples to follow.  Every part of the temple is mopped with cow dung water.  It is said that about 300 years ago, Lord Muruga appeared in the dream of a trader and told him that He was lying as a swayambu in a particular place.  The trader went to the place along with other villagers and got the swayambu.  They made an idol of Muruga with His staff and installed HIM and the Swayambu and began daily pujas before building a temple with a sanctum sanctorum, Mahamandap and other parts.  Yet, the construction could not go continuously due to paucity of funds.  The financial situations depend of the farm earnings.  The people of the village decided to take up the cause themselves.  They brought sand, bricks and other materials in the bullock carts and employed sculptures and completed the construction before the schedule.  As Lord Muruga is always in a higher level, with due regard to the tradition, He is placed on a round (Vattam in Tamil) tall rock in the temple.  Hence, the name Vattamalai Andavar.

        Architecture

The temple is facing east.  In Tamil Murugu means beauty.  So Lord Muruga is all handsome beyond the imagination of even a learned poet.  He appears smiling.   One day, people heard a thunder like noise in the south side of the sanctum sanctorum.   When people visited the place, they saw a deep pit in the shape of an eye with full of water.  Probably, Lord Muruga created a holy spring for Himself.  The pit is 8 feet deep.  The water is very sweet and perennial throughout the year.

        Festivals
Monthly Kruthika star days, new moon days, Karthikai Deepam in November-December.Vaikasi Visakam in May-June, are the days observed with festival glamour. Yet, the 9 day annual Panguni Uthiram in March-April is the most important festival of the temple. It begins with flag hoisting followed by Grama Shanti (warming the village), Ashta Bali Puja, Pari Vettai and car festival, Maha Puja and Shanti Puja. Each day of the festival has its own importance. Lord Muruga shall appear in various Alankaras. The fifth day of the festival is celebrated with all devotion and considered very important.
