The 9 feet tall idol is made of a material called Kadu Sarkarai Yogam, a mixture of stone and lime and coated with glue made with sugar and mustard. Hence, no abhishek is performed to the presiding deity, only to the procession deity.
- Sthala Puran
Suseendram, a holy place in Kanyakumari district was once known as Gnanaranyam-jungle of wisdom. Saptha Rishis – seven Maharshis were performing penance here. Lord granted Darshan to them in the form of Lord Shiva. The Rishis proceeded to Soma Theertha Ghat to have the darshan of Lord Vishnu. Having darshan of Lord as they wished, they also prayed that He should stay in this place. Lord granted their wish and is gracing the devotees as Lord of Wisdom in this place.

This is the sacred Avathar place of Vaishnavite saint Nammalvar and his mother. Also the place is one among the celebrated 108 Viaishnava places called Divya Desas. As Mother has Her place in the chest of the Lord Himself, there is no separate shrine for Thayar. Perumal is wearing a gold chain with a dollar embossed with the figure of Mother Mahalakshmi.
