Thirumohur is the Divya Desam where Perumal took the form of Mohini (enchanting woman).
During the churning of the milky ocean (Ksheera Sagar), the devas and the demons picked up a quarrel. The devas went to the Lord and appealed for freedom from the demons. Lord Vishnu took the form of an enchanting woman and lured the demons and gave the nectar to the devas.
Moham in Sanskrit means passion or desire. As Lord Vishnu took the Mohini form, the place was known as Thirumohanavur, which later came to be known as Thirumohur.
The main deity (Moolavar) is Kalamegaperumal in panchayudha kolam and in a standing posture. The presiding deity Himself led Nammazhwar to Vaikunta.
The Ksheerabthi Nathar and Mother in the shrine are in a praying pose before the presiding deity and this is known as Prarthana Sayanam.
In the Kalamega Perumal Temple, the Sudarshana Chakra figure, the discus of Vishnu, is famous. The front of the Sudarshana Chakra shows Chakrathazhvar. He is one of the five weapons of Sri Vishnu.
Sudharshana Azhwar is found with 16 hands and 16 different weapons in each hand. He is found in prathyaaleetha position where the figure is carved with one foot ahead - signifying the Lord’s readiness to run and help the bhaktas (devotees) who worship him.
On the back of Sudharsana Azhwar is Lord Narasingha Perumal in a yoga position holding a chakra and the conch in His hands. This figure of Vishnu is carved amidst 48 fairies.
There are 6 circles with the 16 weapons shown inside it and 154 letters signifying Hiranya Samhaaram (killing of the demon Hirnaya) as well as 48 other images of Lord Vishnu. Both Sudharsana Alwar and Lord Narasimhar are surrounded by fire.
Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is glorified in the Divya Prabandham, the early medieval Tamil canon of the Azhwar saints from the 6th–9th centuries A.D.
The temple is believed to have been built by the Pandyas, with later additions by the Madurai Nayaks.
Sangam literature details about this place being prosperous during the time. The documentation from Ptolemy (100 – 170 A.D.) also makes reference to this place.
The temple is more than 2000 years old and has been referred to in akanaṉūṟu, Padhitrupathu, Madurai Kanchi and also in one of the five great epics of Tamil literature, silappatikaram.
The temple Address: Sri Kalamegaperumal temple, Thirumohur, Madurai Dist., Tamil Nadu - 625 107.
- Architecture
The temple is situated on a 2.5-acre (10,000 m2) land area and has a 5 tier raja gopuram.
There are four prakarams(closed precincts of a temple) inside the temple. The main deity (Moolavar) is Kalamegaperumal in panchayudha kolam and in a standing posture, Thayar - Mogavalli, Utsavar - Thirumogur Aabthan, Theertham - Kshirabtha Pushkarini, Thala Viruksham - Vilvam and Vimanam - Kethaki Vimanam. The Prathanasayana appearance of the main deity is not found anywhere in 108 Divya Desam temples. The temple has a five-tiered raja gopuram (gateway tower). There are columned pillars in the hall leading to the Garuda hall, which also has a small gopuram. The sanctum houses the shrine of Kalamegha and also has the images of Bhoodevi and Sridevi.
The major feature is that is unlike other temples, the Devis do not touch the feet of the presiding deity. A separate shrine accommodates the image of Anantasayi Vishnu. The consort of the presiding deity, Tirumohurvalli (also called Mohanavalli) is housed in a separate shrine.
The front of the Sudarshana Chakra is Chakrathazhvar and the back side is Narasingha Perumal, situated amidst 48 fairies and inside the six circles there are 16 aayuthams with 154 letters. The letters are believed to be text from Bhijakshara Mantra. Perumal is depicted with 16 hands and three eyes glowing like fire. The image of Chakrathazwhar in the temple is depicted with sixteen hands each holding different weapons. On the reverse side of the image, Narsimha is depicted.
