The Thiruchembur Murugan Temple Complex is located on a plot of 2300 sq. yards at Chheda Nagar, Chembur, a northeastern suburb of Mumbai. The multipurpose temple complex was consecrated in 1980.
The temple houses idols of Ganesha, Dharmasastha, Guruvayoorappan, Anjaneyar, Shiva, and Goddess Durga with Lord Murugan being the presiding deity.
The 26-feet tall Rajagopuram is seated on the 51-feet high RCC structure.
Traditionally the six abodes of Lord Kathikeya in different parts of India are located on hills. Likewise, this temple with Lord Muruga as the presiding deity is located on an elevated site.
The sanctum sanctorum of all deities are placed on RCC structures rising from the ground level so that they adhere to the religious prescription that the sanctum sanctorum should maintain contact with the earth (bhoosparsham).
The Maha Kumbhabhishekam for the temple was performed on 24th January 1980 in the benign presence of His Holiness Jagadguru Sankaracharya Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swamiji of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, who for the first time visited Mumbai by Pada Yatra for this purpose.
The Jeernordharana Ashtabandhana Maha Kumbhabhishekam was performed on 12th December 1991. On this occasion, 'Swarnabandhanam' for Lord Muruga and Gold plating of 'Dwajasthambham' was done.
A Golden Chariot (Thanga Ratham) was dedicated to Lord Muruga in 1995-96. The 14.5 feet tall Chariot is made of 8 Kgs of Gold embedded on copper plates engraved on a wooden base. Lord Muruga, adorned in the Chariot is taken in procession around the temple on every Krithikai day.
On the Third Mahakumbhabhishekam in the year 2000, Lord Muruga was adorned with a Vaira Vael (Diamond Studded Vael) and Swarnabandhanam was done for Goddess Valli and Goddess Devasena.
The 4-feet Vaira Vael is made of 51 carrots of white diamonds embedded on a Gold base.
- Architecture
The structure, a blend of the traditional and modern architectures- the temple in blue granite stones in the traditional style stand on a concrete structure made of RCC. Nearly 800 tonnes of granite specially picked from Pattimalai Kuppam near Kanchipuram was carved in ritualistic fashion in Wallajabad and Mahabalipuram near Chennai and transported to Chembur.
They were then assembled, block-by-block, by experts in the temple art to form the intricate structures.
