It is in close proximity to the ancient fort of Sisupalgarh, which is identified as the Kalinganagari of king Kharavela of the 1st century BC, the local legend assign the temple to 1st century BC and king Kharavela as the builder of the original temple. The temple fragments, however, do not agree to such an early date.
- Architecture
The unique feature of the temple is that it stands facing the direction west. The Vimana (tower) and Jagamohana have a square design. The temple stands on a unique foundation called ‘ganthiala’ and stands on a low raised rectangular platform. The outer compound wall measures approximately 43m in length, 36.5m in width and 2m high. Some parts of the temple including few pillars and the Udhyota Simha is said to have been in a dilapidated state. These fragments are believed to be from a very ancient period and are found scattered around the temple complex. The Pidha Vimana and Jagamohana of this she in pertain to the Kalingan style but I currently in a very poor state. The temple is designed according to the principles of Ashlar masonry, where sand stone had been used to build the temple. The compound wall and foundation of this temple is made up of the material laterite.
