Goddess Parvathi made penance towards the lord from here .The lord decided to test her and delayed His darshan. Goddess came to know of this and stood in one leg and started her penance.
Though Lord Shiva got satisfied but extended His test. At last He came to this place in the form of a big flame (Jyothiswarubam).
Upon knowing the Lord Parvathi embraced him. Hence the Lord is called Sivakkozhundeeswarar and the place is called as Siva Sakthi mutram.
This temple was reconstructed with stone during the period of Sembiyan Madevi and the early years of Raja Raja Chola I (1000 CE).
Inscriptions from the period of Raja Raja Chola II (1166-1182 CE), Kulottunga Chola III, and the Vijayanagar Emperors are found here.
