A devotee Chakkarayar Aiyar living in north during the Vijayanagara days came to south. He took a little sand from the Shakti temple where he was worshipping. He was advised by Ambica to place the sand at a place suggested by her for his worship. The devotee placed the sand and put a stone on it as deity and worshipped. Later another devotee installed three Ambicas there and built the temple and named the presiding deity Muthalamman. This is the first Shakti temple in the place. Based on the first letter of Tamil language, the place was named Akaram (A).
