As per legend, some saints who lived here thought they were very powerful and we're not very keen on worshipping God. Lord Shiva decided to teach them a lesson. The sages in turn threw poisonous snakes on the Lord.
Lord Shiva grabbed the snakes and wore them as ornaments. The sages realized their mistake and worshipped Him. So, the Lord is known as Naganatha Swamy.
Sage Saramamuni worshipped the Lord with Sevvandi flowers and hence, He is known as Sevvandi nathar.
