        Sthala Puran

Thne coastal belt of Karunadu (Karnataka) which is famously known as "Tulunadu" is blessed with mesmerising nature beauty with green top covered was once ruled by the Toulava's. Here special imporatnce are given to the worship of God along with "Daivas" which forms an inevitable part of the socio-cultural life of the people. This land which is also known as "Parashurama Shristhi", extends from Chandragiri in the South upto Kodachadri in the North and it houses many number of temples, Daivasthana's, Mautt's, Mandir's which reflects the faith of the people on the almighty.

Shree Durgaparameshwari Temple dedicated to Shree Devi, is considered to be one of the most ancient temple with its history dating back to many yearss back located at Talapady village in Mangaluru taluk of Dakshina Kannada District adjoining the border areas of Kerala State.

Shree Devi is the main deity in this temple with Lord Shree Mahaganapathy, Shree Veerabhadra Swamy and other Parivara Daivas being the other deities worshipped in the temple by the people who have witnessed the fulfillment of their prayers in a very short span of time. It is very unfortunate for not having any written documents nor mention in any inscriptions about the history of the temple. Hence there is a need to rely on those stories revealed by the people which has passed on them from generations and also on informations revealed during Astamangala Prashne . As per those stories, it is believed that this Kshethra was an Shivalaya earlier. One of the disciple of Jagadguru Shree Shankaracharya who had performed a penance at Kodachadri where the Goddess Shree Mookambika, requested the Goddess to follow him and help those needy devotees to get rid of their sufferings and bless them. The Goddess accepted his request to follow him with two characteristics of Sathvika and Taamasa retaining Rajasa form, one among the three characteristics of Mookambika at Kollur, accompained with Veerabhadra who is considered to her guard. She aslo asked him to make arrangements at suitable place for her "Pratishtapana".

The disciple travelled towards the south where he accepted an Brahmin "vatu" of Shitthillaya family as his disciple ta Udupi, which is famously known as "Jnana Kashi". When they both arrived to Nandikoor, since it was very late night Devi decided to instate Tamasa form at the Shivalaya, which later became popular as "Mahishamardhini Kshetra". They both continued their journey. When they both reached a Shivalaya at Talapady, "Yathi" performed "Sandhyavandane" at the nearby lake but disappeared by then next day's sunrise with disciple being lone. The disciple was provided the shelter by the King and the villagers who instated the Sathvika characteristics of Shree Devi to the Shivalinga and worshipped Sapthashati Grantha and "Danda" of Veerabhadra Swamy.

After many years, one of the Raja purohith, origin of Talekkala found Conch, Chakra, Unique idol of Shree Devi in the form of Abhaya Hastha in the forest. On the same night, Shree Devi appeared to him in dream advising him to instate the idol which he had found in the forest the day before at Talapady with she being residing there in the form of Durgaparameshwari, the Sathvika form of Shree Mookambika. As per her advice, Raj purohith installed the idol which he had found in the forest at Talapady and worshipped the Goddess.
