        Sthala Puran

Nearly 400 years ago, the family belonging to Kshatri kings from Mayappady of Kumbula ruled the area of Anantha Kody of Ulayibettu Village.

King Raamanthaaya had two nephews, Krishna Sharma and Rama Sharma. Rama Sharma built a beautiful palace and lived at Idma Parari of Ulayibettu Village. Krishna Sharma lived at Parari of Tiruvail village. King had gifted land to Krishna Sharma and Rama Sharma at Tiruvail. Lord Ganesha and Eshwara were their deity and had built the temples to them at Saale of Ulaiyibettu village.

To the north of this temple, the Phalguni river flows by which is also known as Mrakandu Teertha. There was a dense forest beside the bank of the river where Saptha Rishi’s lived. They performed yagas and other rituals in the area front of the temple.

Towards the south of the temple, there was a town called Benjanapadavu, which was also called Saale or Musalman Pete. As there were many Muslim families living in this area, thus it got the name.

Since King Ramnathaaya didn’t have the children, he seeked the blessings of Saptha Rishi, for which Puthrakaameshtiyaaga was performed. Thus King was blessed with many children. During Yaaga, King built a Annashaale at Saalememane for the purpose of Annadaana. In Tulu, the place which brought milk came to known as Permanaki, Benjanapadvu got its name as it got curds, Padu for bringing flowers and Bondanthila for tender coconut. Till now the same name exists for all these places.

As king was blessed with as many as childrens , his nephews felt very jealous. They laid a trap to kill the king by bribing the priest, asking him to adulter the teertha with the poison and give it to king as prasada, for which priest accepted. One day when king came to the temple to take prasada, he saw the priest shivering as he was about to offer the king the prasada. When King asked the priest, why he was restless, priest revealed the conspiracy that was laid to kill him by his own nephews. But king said, as he was Kshatriya he will never take back his hand which he had offered to take prasada from the priest. And aslo said if the teertha contained any poison, let it turn out as a amritha for which he promised to build a temple to Lord Shiva and name it as Amratheshwara. Seeking blessing, king drank the teertha, but it turned to be a amritha.

Next day he installed a Shiva Linga at Tiruvana. He made necessary arrangements so that deity is offered pooja rituals. He then ordered death sentence to his nephew who laid conspiracy to kill him. He then bought an idol of Vishnu from Uppinangady and installed the same in region surrounded by trees and named it as Vihnumurthy. He ordered his minister to make required arrangements for offering pooja rituals.
