As the story in the purana runs, after the war of Kurukshetra in Dwapara Yuga, Pandavas feel guilty over the mammoth destruction and suffering caused in the war. So on the advice of Sri Krishna they decided to hold “Rajasooryadhwara Yaga”. As a part of the yaga ritual, meals are served on a large scale to the people (Anna Santharpane) and thereafter to purify the “Yagna Mantapa”, Sri Krishna suggests to get “Pushpa Mruga”, a divine animal. Bheemasena, one of the Pandavas, being given the responsibility of bringing the animal dashed to “Mahendragiri”, to fetch it. But on the way he meets Hanumatha, the divine Vanara of Theerthgayuga taking rest due to old age. Bhimasena finds it difficult to cross the tail of Hanumantha, which is stretched on his way and he requests to him to remove the tail. But Hanumanatha asks Bheemasena to lift and keep the tail aside. Bheemasena decides to lift the tail. He puts his maximum effort to lift the tail but he struggles and fails. But later they both realize that they are divine powers. Hanumantha comes to know the pupose of Bheemasena’s journey and he offers him the hair from his tail as a cover of protection, blesses him and wishes him well.
Bheemasena, afterreaching Mahendragiri meets Pushpamruga and requests to accompany him. The animal agrees on a condition that it would follow him only a “manovega” - speed at which mind moves. Bheemasena agrees trusting the tail hair given to him by Hanumantha could help him on this regard. Thus while leading the animal, whenever Bheemasena finds that he cannot keep the pace with the animal that follows him, he drops a hair, strangely a “Shivalinga” appears just on the spot and the Pushpamruga proceeds only after worshipping the linga thereby giving Bheemasena sufficient time to adjust his speed. As the process continues, when they reach the place now called “Uppinangady” , Bheemasena finds it difficult to keep in pace with the animal and thus drops all the remaining one thousand tail hair. There appears one thousand lingas and by the time the animal completes the worship to those linga’s, Bheemasena safely reaches the Yagamantapa. Thus it is believed that there are 1000 Lingas found in the temple vicinity. One out of those Lingas found in the middle of the river sand becomes visible in the month of February.
