        Sthala Puran

Sage Jabali undertook a severe penance to end the famine that engulfed the region once. Indira asked Nandhini daughter of Kamadenu to go to Earth to make it fertile and save the region from drought. But Nandini refused and prayed to Mother Uma not to send her to Bhooloka. Mother said that she need not go as a Cow but in the form of a river Nandhini began to flow in the name of Netravathi.

A demon Arunasura by name was harassing the people then. He received boon from Baghawan Brahma to be not killed by devas, gandharvas, yaks has, man, woman, two legged beings, four legged beings etc. Maa Sharadha(Saraswati) had also gave a boon with which if he chant Gayatri mantra he will not die. With the strength of the boons Arunasura started ruling three worlds.

Brahmadi devas, along with Brahma and Vishnu prayed to Mother for protection. Ambica appeared before them and told that he can be only killed after he stops chanting Gayatri mantra, so Ambica instructed Brihaspati to confuse him and turn him into nasthik.

Brihaspathi approached Arunasura, flattered him, poisoned his ears and succeeded in diverting him from his meditation. Now Arunasura vainly felt that he was more than God himself. He not only ordered his subjects to worship him but also troubled the sages and spoiled their Yajnas.

Chanda, Prachanda, ministers of Arunasura saw her and informed the master about her beauty. Arunasura decided to marry her and approached her. When she turned deaf ears to his request teased him for fleeing from the war field, in afraid of the lady who killed his masters Shumbha Nishumbha, he became furious. When he tried to take her by storm, she disappeared inside rock. Arunasura broke the rock with his sword. Suddenly, a vast swarm of bees emerged from the rock and stung him. Devi had taken the form of a big, furious bee that is ‘Bhramara’ and stung him repeatedly till his last breath. Now the Devas and the sages led by Jabali performed Abhishekham to Devi with tender coconut brought from the Kalpavriksha of Devaloka, and prayed her to bless the world with ‘Soumya Roopa’ (tender posture). According to this request Devi emerged in the form of ‘Linga’ (symbolic holy rock) in the middle of the river Netravati is known as Shree Durga Parameshwari.

It is said that She is in the form of a Linga but dressed – Alankara – as Ambica. As Ambica appeared from the lap –Madi in Tamil and Kadil in Kannada – the place was called Kadil. Presently the name is Kateel.
