Perunna Subrahmanya Swami Temple, said to be more than 1200 years old, is said to be the only temple of Muruga in the world where the deity is shown holding his Vel (lance) pointing downwards after killing the demon Tharakasura.Local legend says that some 500 years ago there was a village called Umbizhi, near Perunna. (This is the place where Changanacherry Railway Station is now situated). Like Perunna, this village was a Brahmin settlement though with a difference. Perunna Brahmins were dharmic (righteous) people and dedicated to performing good deeds. The Umbishis were more into ugra tantric practices or black magic related practices.

Perunna inscriptions

Inscriptions in the Vatteshuthu alphabet can be seen at the west gate of the temple. These are believed to be written in the 10th century, during the rule of Kulasekhara Koyiladhikari. Perunna is a holy place with a lot of temples. the deity inside the temple is in a furious mood because he came here after killing the asura (demon). Sarppa deva, rakshas, ayyappa, mahaganapathi, krishna, shiva are other deities in this temple. a lot of people came here and pray to Lord Muruga. Tuesday is an important day in this temple. the pooja is done by brahmin specialists. December - January are times of the festival in this temple. he is known as the ruler or king of perunna kingdom.
