Lord Indra took birth as King Kari due to the curse of Dakshan. One day, when he went for hunting, he saw a Shiva lingam under the Kala maram. He put a fence for the Shiva Lingam and returned.
Next day, when he went there, he saw the fence disturbed and removed it. The King thought that some animal must have done it, and again, he put a fence for the Shiva lingam. Next day, when he went there, he saw once again the fence disturbed.
That day, he decided to stay back to see who was doing that work. At midnight, he saw an elephant removing the fence; the king controlled his anger and watched what was going to happen next. He saw the elephant going around the Shiva Lingam. He was surprised to see this.
He continued with his attempts to put a fence, but every time, he found the fence removed by the elephant. One day, he lost his patience and decided to attack the elephant. At that time, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi appeared and blessed both Lord Indra and the elephant.
Sukran worshipped Lord Shiva who appeared milky white, and hence, the name Paalvannanathar.
