- Sthala Puran
Sri Mahalakshmi and Sri Mahasaraswathi once entered into a debate about the supremacy of the one over the other. They approached Lord Brahmma who said Sri Mahalaskhmi was superior. Angry Saraswathi left Brahmma, came to Sasia hills in Earth and began penance to attain supremacy. Meantime, Lord Brahmma organized a Yajna dedicated to Lord Vishnu. As a rule, such rituals should be performed along with wife by the side. Brahmma invited Saraswathi to join him the Yajna but She refused. Brahmma created a woman with the attributes of Maha Saraswathi, named her Savitri, married her and began the Yagjna. This further infuriated Mother Saraswathi.
To destroy the Yagna, Saraswithi took the form of a river, Ksheera Nadhi and began flooding furiously. Brahmma took asylum in Perumal who placed Adisesha across the river and prevented the spate. Perumal spoke to Saraswathi and made Her understand that Savithri was not different from her. Brahmma and Saraswathi joined together again.
As Lord chose so willingly this place and took the reclining form, He is named Pallikondan (taking reclining form). He is also called Uthara Ranganathar.
