        Sthala Puran

The history of the temples dates back to one thousand years.  Guru Adi Malai is a place in the western region.  As the place had the luck of the footsteps (Adi) of Acharya Sri Ramanuja (Guru) in this hill area (Malai) in the western region, it was named Guru Adi Malai.  The confluence of rivers from Palamalai and nearby areas happens here forming a single big river.  For safety from flash floods, in between the two banks (Iru Karai in Tamil) of the river is built in an upper level.  Now it is called Idigarai.

Yielding to the ill advices of some Pandits, the Chola king developed hatred against Vaishnavism and caused many injustices to followers.  He planned to kill Sri Ramanuja  and Koorathazhwar.  Azhwar took the saffron robe of his Acharya went to the Chola king.  He called the pandits for a debate, defeated them and established the glory of Vaishnavism.  Exasperated Chola king ordered plucking of he eyes of Koorathazhwar, Sri Ramanuja and Peria Nambi.  Koorathazhwar flew into passion, plucked his own eyes, threw it on the face of the king and returned back.

Sri Ramanuja continued his mission, travelled in the Kongu region covering Palamalai, Guru Adi Malai, Karamadai, Satymangalam and other places.  He left his disciples in these places to spread Vaishnavism.  They came to Idigarai and satisfied with the fertility of the place and kindness of the people there, installed Sri Ranganatha and established Vaishnava cult. A temple was built then by the Pandya kings during the 14th Century then.  As their symbol was fish, representing the Matsyavadhara, such symbols are many in the   region

Lord appears majestically in a recling for on the Adisesha coiling as a bed.  The Paramapada entrance is in the northern side of Mahamandapa.  As Srirangam is in between Cauvery and Kollidam rivers, the Idigarai Vishnu temple is also between the two banks of a river.  This is an ancient Vishnu temple in this Kongu region.  It is a temple, comparable with the glory of the great Divya Deas Vishnu temples in India.  Sri Ranganayaki Thayar has separate shrine in Idigari and Karamadai temples only as in Srirangam.
