        Sthala Puran
Birth of Uma Devi as Renugai: With the blessings of Brahma, the Mother of all world Uma Devi was born to Eraivadha Maharaja, the king of Vidharppa Desam. The child named as Renugai grew and attained marital age. Permitted by her father and according to the customs of that times, Renugai traveled the whole world accompanied by her friends and an army in search of a suitable husband. At last she arrived Kundalipuram, where saint Jamathakni was doing penance. Since Renugai camped near the Ashram with her soldiers, the sacred place was named `Padai Veedu` (army encampment). `Padaiveedu` is now called as `A.K.Padavedu (Amman Koil Padavedu)`. Here, Renugai saw Saint Jamathakni.
Kamandala Nadhi(River): At that time a war broke out between the disciples of the Saint Jamathakni and the soldiers of Renugai. Durga alias Chamundeeswari who accompanied Renugai, effected havoc by the fire appeared from her third eye. Hearing this, the Saint Jamathakni brought all the Teerthas available in three worlds in his kamandalam (water_jug used by ascetics) and dropped it. The water from kamandalam transformed into a huge river and extinguished the fire brought by Chamundeeswari. This river is known as `Kamandala Nadhi`.Learned through a voice form Heaven that Saint Jamathakni would be her husband. Renugai requested the saint to marry her. Saint Jamathakni agreed and both of them got married. They gave birth a child `Parasuramar`, a Vishnu Avatar.Renugai seeing the Shadow of a Gandharva Once, when Renugai went to the Lotus pond to take bath, she happened to see the shadow of a Gandharva, (celestial) through the pond water. When she wondered at the handsome and youthful appearance of the Gandharva, the mud pot in her hand broke and the water wetted her whole body. Knowing this, Saint Jamathakni got angry and ordered his son Parasuramar to cut the head of his mother. Parasuramar obeyed the orders and severed the head of his mother Renugai. He also severed his hand. Then he returned to his father and asked for a boon to bring his mother alive. Saint Jamathakni yielded to his request and offered water from his kamandalam reciting mantras.Parasuramar went to the place where he severed the head of his mother. By mistake he joined the head of his mother with the body of a female sinner found nearby and sprinkled the holy water brought from the Saint Jamathakni. Renugai came alive. Parasuramar went to his father and narrated the mistake committed by him. Saint Jamathakni told Parasuramar `what had happened was the will of God, hence could not be changed` and permitted Renugai to continue her service at the Ashram.Once Kathaveeriya Arjunan, the king of Kekeya Desam, visited Kundali forest. Saint Jamathakni offered shelter and food obtained from Kamadhenu (giver of all fortunes) to the king and his army. While taking leave, the king requested Saint Jamathakni to give him Kamadhenu. As the saint refused, the king fought with the Saint and decamped with Kamadhenu after killing the saint.Hearing the incident, Parasuramar got angry. He fought with Kathaveeriya Arjunan and recovered Kamadhenu after killing him. When the body of Saint Jamathakni was cremated, Renugai too entered the funeral fire. At that time, by Gods` grace the rain poured and the funeral fire got extinguished. Renugai arose from the fire with boils all over her body and dressed in neem leaves. Lord Siva appeared and resurrected Saint Jamathakni. As prayed by Mother Renuga Devi, He granted her a boon to remain in this world as Goddess with her head alone and bestow her blessings. Goddess Renuga Devi self-manifested herself in Padaiveedu and started offering blessings and boons to her devotees.
