- Sthala PuranSuchindrum Thalapuranam is the oldest one in writing form among all temples located in Kanyakumari District. There are four stories related to Suchindrum Thanumalayan Temple. They are (1) story of Athri Maharishi and Devi Anushya (2) story about Indira`s release from his curse (3) story about Aramvalarthamman and (4) story about the crippled marriage of lord Thanumalaya and Devi Kanyakumari.
Among these stories the first two were connected with mythology and in writing form. Third one is linked with local Zone and the fourth story travels in verbal tradition.
Athri Maharish borned from the eyes of Lord Brahma. As per Ramayana Lord Rama stayed in Athri maharishis asrama for sometime during the period of wilderness. Athri Maharishi and his wife devi Anushya were not having children for long time. They started penancing for the grace of Lord Paranthama. Then Lord Paranthama appreared and instructed them to go to Gnanaranya that exixts nearby mount Pothikai and continue their penance.
With respect to Lord Paranthama`s said they went to Gnanaranya and continued their penence. After sometime as Indira invited Athri Maharishi to his Indraloka (Amarapuri) Athri Maharishi went there. Devi Anushya continued her penance. Mummoorthi want to test Anushya`s penance they made Gnanaranya drought. There became lack of water not having even a for the purpose of penance. Devi Anushya sprayed water from the Kamandalam of his husband Athri Maharishi. And that made rainfall in that place.
Meanwhile Mummoorthis came there in the form of Yasakas` to test Devi Anushya. She greeted them and offered food. But the Mummoorthis` ordered her to serve food without clothes. She agreed and made them as children with the power of her penance. Hearing this the wives of Mummoorthis` came there and saved them. As Athri Mahrishi and Devi Anushya requested the Mummoorthis` incarnated as Chandra, Dhathathreya and Mahrishi Dhurvasa respectively. Suchindrum has these specialities.
Suchindrum also connected with another story of Indra got released from his curse. This story is about Mahrishi Gowdham, Devi Akhalya and Indra. This story took place in Ramayana, As Indra had lust on Devi Akhalya, he got a curse. To retrieve from his curse he came to Gnanaranya. His chariot stopped at one place and that place is known as Theroor. His white elephant named Airawadham teared surface with his tusks and that made a river named Kottaru. As the penance of Indra being succeeded the Lord Thanumalaya appeared and released his from his curse. As indra got Suchi, this place is named as Suchindrum.
The next story is about the Goddess of this temple called Aramvalartha Amman. This story tells about one girl lived in Theroor which is located nearby Suchindrum. One fine day she came to Suchindrum temple her parents. Suddenly she got vanished while she stepped in the prakara. Lord Thanumalaya took her. Purana Shows that this incident happened in the year 1444. In the rememberance of this incident Thirukkalyanam is being celebrated in this Temple in the Tamil month of Maasi.
One more story is about this temple. Devi Kanyakumari incarnated to destroy Panasura. There was a boon that Panasura can only be destroyed by a virgin girl.
