Venkatappa Naicker who ruled this region went on a pilgrimage to various sacred places seeking a child boon and finally came to this place. When he had a dip in Srinivasa Kattam, he heard a voice that he would be blessed with a child if he fed 1000 children quenching their hunger.
He followed the directions of the voice and was blessed with a child. Immensely pleased with the male child he was blessed with, he built this temple, developed the area and made it fit for human habitation. He named the place Tiruvenkatanatha Puram after his name.
This place is also known as Thirunankovil.
