Maharshis Kashyapa and Narada, Varuna and Sukosha prayed to Lord to grant them His Narasimha darshan. They were advised to perform penance on the banks of River Chitra and assured darshan at an appropriate moment. They followed Lord’s advice devotionally. The heat of their penance reached Lord’s Abode Vaikunta. They heard the roaring of a lion during the Pradosha time – i.e. 4.30 p.m. and 6.00 p.m. The lost themselves seeing the Lord roaring and enjoyed the darshan.
Later, a temple was built at the spot. As Lord appeared ferociously, the place was reduced to ashes. To bring down the fury of the Lord and make Him pleasing, devotees installed Mahalakshmi on His chest.
