        Sthala Puran

Maharshis Kashyapa and Narada, Varuna and Sukosha prayed to Lord to grant them His Narasimha darshan.  They were advised to perform penance on the banks of River Chitra and assured darshan at an appropriate moment.  They followed Lord’s advice devotionally.  The heat of their penance reached Lord’s Abode Vaikunta.  They heard the roaring of a lion during the Pradosha time – i.e. 4.30 p.m. and 6.00 p.m.  The lost themselves seeing the Lord roaring and enjoyed the darshan.

Later, a temple was built at the spot.  As Lord appeared ferociously, the place was reduced to ashes.  To bring down the fury of the Lord and make Him pleasing, devotees installed Mahalakshmi on His chest.

        Architecture

Narasimha Perumal graces in sitting form facing west.  The sanctum sanctorum is small in size as in cave temples.  Lord Prasanna Venkatachalapathi with Mother Alarmel Mangai graces facing east in front of the temple.

Presiding deity Lord Narasimha appears ferociously with 16 hands killing demon Hiranya.  He is holding Hiranya on His left lap.  While four hands are tearing his belly, two are pulling the veins.  Other hands are holding various weapons including His discus.  Maharshis Kashyapa and Narada, Varuna, Sukosha and others are standing nearby worshipping the Lord.  An umbrella symbolizing Dharma above the head and two fans known as Ven Samaram are around the Lord.
