When Lord Murugan set out to destroy the demons, he wanted to worship his parents and Ganesha. Then Lord Shiva arose at Italam as Arulmigu Sankaranayaki Sametha Arulmigu Kandhanathaswamy.

As Kandhar worshiped and conquered demons, Eason`s name became Kandhanathar. Saravanapoikai is the lake created for the worship of Lord Murugan. The name Kumarapuram was also given to Erakaram due to the place where Kumaran sat.

The sage also told that if both take bath in Saravanpoigai pool made by Lord Muruga and worship Eraharam Arulmigu Sankaranayagi sametha Arulmigu Kandhanathar, they could recover from curse. both similarly did and recovered from curse.
