- Sthala PuranFour Hundred and fifty (450) years ago, in the area of the place Sathurakiri Mountain where Lord siva is blessing all and situated in the western Ghats of Tamilnadu, Sivayoga Gnana Siththar was doing his deep penance expecting boon from the holy Mother PARASAKTHI AMMAN for his Motcham and fro her stay where he achieves ldquoMotchamrdquo Thus, he was blessed with his place that the holy Mariamman should offer Her Grace to all the devotees. The Amman accepted his requisition with a condition that the place should be with five holy rivers. So Sivayoga Gnana Siththar chose this Irukkangudi and got Motcham to bless all pilgrim with grace of the holy mother PARASAKTHI. At the time of setting boon from the holy mother, there arose harsh flood in the southern Tamilnadu due to heavy rain in the western Ghats and so many villages were taken away completely. At that time the holy statue o the Mother Parasakthi was brought to this holy Irukkangudi where Sivayoga Gnana Siththar got Mother and burned in to this holy learned. Thus the holy IRUKKANGUDI PARASAKTHI MARIAMMAN blesses all the devotees due to the warm place of Sivayoga Gnana Siththar because of PARASAKTHIrsquoS grace, Amman Temple was built with holy water consequently, every year during the Tamil moth of Aadi, Thai and Pangudi Sacred Festivals are being celebrated by the holy devotees of PARASAKTHI IRUKKANGUDI MARIAMMAN.This temple is located between the two rivers Vaipparu and Arjuna. As two Ganges meet here it got its name Irukkangudi. River Arjuna flowing in the Northern part of this temple originates at Mahalinga hills known as vathira Iruppu hills in the west. According to `Thiruthankal Temple Lore` once upon a time when Pancha Pandavas came here. Arjuna prayed to Goddess Ganga and split the earth with `Varunakanai` (arrow) forming a river. The river formed as a result came to be known as Arjuna river.
