Devi Jagadambika Temple or Jagadambika Temple is one of a group of about 25 temples at Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, India. Khajuraho is a World Heritage Site. The temples of Khajuraho were built by the rulers of the Chandela dynasty between the 10th and the 12th centuries.

Devi Jagadambika temple, in a group to the north, is one of the most finely decorated temples at Khajuraho. It is named after Jagadambika, a Hindu goddess related to devi. Three bands of carvings encircle the body of the temple. In the sanctum is an enormous image of the Goddess (Parvati).

Also known as Jagadambika Temple, Devi Jagadambi Temple was built by the Chandela rulers between 1000 AD & 1025 AD. Originally it was dedicated to Lord Vishnu, which is evident from the figures represented in the form of beautiful stone carvings of Lord Vishnu and his avatars on the two lower bands of the temple. Later the temple was dedicated to Goddess Parvati and then to Goddess Kali. It is believed that the idol in the temple is an image of Parvati, which was painted black to provide it the appearance of Goddess Kali.

        Architecture

The temple is situated on the common platform of the Kandariya Mahadev Temple but small in height. Believed to be slightly older than the magnificent Kandariya Temple, the temple possesses a three-part design. This temple essentially resembles the Chitragupta Temple in respect of design, dimensions and decorative scheme and the two temples, therefore, are quite close to each other in time as they are in space. It consists of a sanctum without pradakshina path, a maha-mandapa and an entrance porch. There is a huge image of the Devi Jagdambi in the inner sanctum.

The sculptures around the temple are in three bands. Many of the two lower band images are dedicated to Lord Vishnu but the third and the uppermost band of the temple showcase some of the most erotic sculptures in Khajuraho. One can also find the presence of a big sculpture of a warrior fighting with a lion bare handed just at the entrance of the temple. This is considered to be the symbol of the Chandela Dynasty.
