        Sthala Puran

Chennakesava Swamy Temple built by King Sri Krishnadevaraya, one of the oldest temples in the state .

It is said that Lord Vishnu killed the demon Kesi at this place. The Main deity Chenna Kesava Swamy was accompanied by His Consort Goddess Lakshmi in the Sanctum Sanctorum.

The unique feature of this temple is that every year during the morning of 16th December to 14th January, the sun rays enter the sanctum sanctorum through a window and touch the feet of the deity. This is a masterpiece of architectural wonder that shows the expertise of the artisans of Vijayanagar Dynasty. This makes the deity’s feet glow for 20 minutes. During this phenomenon, thousands of devotees visit the temple to catch a glimpse of this spectacular sight.

        Architecture

Chenna Kesava Swamy temple was established between 1405 -1459 AD, under the rule of Vijayanagar. The temple has marvellous gopurams. The first level of the temple was built during the reign of King Krishnadeva Raya while the rest of the levels were constructed in 1837. The walls of Chenna Kesava Swamy Temple were built in 1425 AD These walls has 18 Inblockedions craved on it. These Inblockedions display the information about the tradition, culture and lifestyle of people during the king Krishnadeva Raya’s reign. The king donated around 355 acres of land to the nearby villages so that the people from these villages can take care of the temple.

The wonderful Kalyana Mandapam of the temple has 6 musical pillars that create 7 musical notes in its correct "Aaroha" and "Avaroha" when tapped gently with the fingers.
