        Sthala Puran
There lived a king by the name of Ukkirapandian at Ukkirankottai in the eleventh century. In his reign, once he made a trip to Madurai to wordship Lord Somasundaram. During the trip he fell to the ground after being gored by his elephant. At that time Manikrivan alias punnaivana watchman appered before him and told him that be punnaivanam hed a sanke – pit when destroyed a tail – less sanke came out. It would be impossible to speak of the brightness of the sanke. The watchman regusted him to get it into the hands of God. On hearing this news, the king was excited. He immediately reached the back - side of the pit and found a sivalinga. He took a dip in the Nagasunai and workshipped God. He also constructed a huge temple with walls, mandapam and Gopuram in the forest . The Rajegopuram was later constructed by Seevalamara pandian. This temple has three important Sannadhis.

        Arulmigu Sankaralinga Swamy :
Sankaralinga Swamy sannidhi is the Pradana Sannadhi. It has four corners with Sarpa Vinayagar in the Kannimoolai , Snake pit in the Vayyu moolai and Vishnu Durga installed in the Isana moolai. Panchalinga is situated inside the western corridor of the temple. The tri - murth sannadhis of Lord Dakhinamoorthy, Yoganarasimmar and Pramma Praharam are located inside . Milk abishek is con- ducted before sarpa Vinayagar and sanke pit to get rid of Ragudosha . The temple has Siva and Chandra theerthas. The piercing of the rising Sun ` s rays and their spreading over the sanctum sanctra the temple on March 21, 22, 23 sept 21, 22 and 23 is a sight to be seen and enjoyed.

        Arulmigu Sankaranarayanna Swamy :
The better half of Lord siva, Umayammai made a petition to the Lord for showing to the world the wrong of distinguishing gods as Siva and Vishnu . She beseeched the Lord to show the sight where in he was with Sri Narayana moorthy. Lord Siva acceded to the request of his better half and told her that she would hava dharsan of Sankara and Narayana in the punnaivanam of the podhigai mountain range of the earth after proper penance Accordingly, Umayannai descended to the earth along with her entourage of Deva madhas and did penance and attained the names of Gomathy Ammai and Avudayammai . The Lord kept his word and gave dharshan to her on the Uthirda day of the Tamil month of Aadi. The Moolava Sannadhi shows Lord Siva and Lord Vishnu as one person.

        Arulmigu Gomathiyambigai :
The Lord showed himself as Sankaranarayana to Gomathiyambigai who was doing penance in the punnivana populated by cows. Devotees with Iumps on their bodies and with seases will become healthy and strengor if they light ghee - lamp and if they smear their bodies with the soil from the snake fit of the Amman Sannidhi . Mentally retarded and possessed people with iumps offer child – cradies and salt and pepper for getting babies and relief from disease . Of- ferings in the from of shapes in gold and silver are made and prayers conducted for relief from bited of sanke, scorpion, centipede and other poisonous insects.
