Rameshwaram Ramanathaswamy Temple is glorified with the deity, temple and theertham .All the three are most prominent in this temple.

Rameshwaram is one of the oldest and most famous pilgrimage center in India. It is associated with the history of the Ramayana period. Rameshwaram temple is also the symbol of Indian integrity. The Kasi pilgrimage is considered to be one of the most important religious duties of the people. The kasi Yatra is complete only after worshipping Ramanathaswamy in Rameshwaram.
Rameshwaram is the only south indian siva temple of the four major temples of India viz, Rameshwaram, Dwarka, Puri and Badrinath .Of these char Dham, Rameshwaram is the only Shiva temple and the other three are vaishnava temples. Out of the twelve Jyotirlingas eleven are located to the north and only Rameswaram is in the south Indian . The place is called as Rameswaram because of the worship of shiva (Ishvara)by Sri Ramapran in this place..
The hymns of Thirunavukkarasar, Thirugana Sankara, Arunagirinathar Muthuswami Dixithar and many other saints have sung the glory of the shiva and goddess of this temple. The temple is situated about 15 acres in an idyllic conch shaped island . The 22 sacred theerthams located inside the temple make the body of the body and the heart clean. Taking holy bath in these theerthams is considered very sacred.

        Historical Highlights:
The temple was maintained by a saint by name Ramanathar up to 10 the century.
From twelfth century one Parakirama baghu, Sri Lankan King maintained the temple. The sanctum sanatorum of the temple was renovated by Ramanathapuram King`s Sethupathi and one Nahur Vaishya built west gopura and mail walls. . One rich man from Madurai built amman sannadhi. In the sixteenth century, one Chinnaudayan Sethupathi under Viswanatha Nayaka, built nandhi mandapam and other renovations. The Nandi here is 22 feet in length and 12 feet in height. Later the Sethupathi kings and the Nattukottai chettiar have done various renovations even in the time when there were no facilities to transport.
A part of the East Rajagopuram was built by Dalavai Sethupathi in the 17th century. Subsequently, a nine-storied, 126-foot-high east tower was completed between 1897-1904 by AL.AR.Nattukkottai chettiar Zamindar family of Devakottai town.
