        Sthala Puran
        Religious importance
This is an ancient Institution of pre-historic age. It is a Saiva Shrine with a swaymbumoorthi. The Sthala Puranam states that when the calf of Kamadhenu was playing in the forest of Arasu trees (Pippilaranya) its leg got plunged into a hard object imbedded inside the earth, from which blood gushed out. It was then discovered that the object was nothing but a sacred Siva Linga. Later on a temple came to be built over the Moolasthanam which attracted large concourse of people throughout the land. The place became Vaippu Sthalam in Siva Lore since it was sanctified by St.Apperr and by St. Sundarar in their `Thevarams`. In this holy place lord shiva appeared for Sundaramoorthi Nayanar and blessed him.
The Kanakasabai or the Golden Hall of dance has beautiful form of Nataraja the dancing posture which he manifested to the Rishis-Gomuni and Pattimuni. The Brahmma, Vishnu, Kalavamuni and Dhurga did tapas in this place to see the dance of Patteeswara. In this holy place Patteeswara danced with Parvathi for the above saints. Historical Importance
The temple Karpagraha was build by Karikarchola in ancient days. In the six century Saint Apper seems to have visited the place since it is mentioned in his `Thevaram` In the early eighth century. A Pandiyan invaded Perur and built a Vishnu temple. In the nineth century, Saint Sundarar visisted the temple and immortalised it in `Thevaran ` In the Kongu Chola Period (11th to 13th centuries) a Mantapa and Mahamantapa were built and used for inscription, numerous gifts to the temple. In the 14th and 15th centuries,Koisala and Vijayanagar Kings gave endowments. In the 16th 17th centuries Vijayanagar and Nayaka kings made additions famous Kanaka Sabhai was built by Alagadri Nayak of Madurai 17th century. TippuSultan Mysore attached half of the Inames of the temple in the 18th century. Later on, the East India Company restored it to the temple. The Swami and Amman Temples were renolvated in the middle of the 18th century and later on, the mantab of 63 Saints was built in the 20th century. The Kalyana mantapam and the front mantapam were built and the gopuram was repaired. Historically, the surroundings of Perur date back to the Roman period as a Tresure Trove of Roman coins were discovered here. Kistavans were also found in the fields on the river known as Pandavar kuli.

        Cultural Importance
This ancient place has produced apart from the `Thevarans` very fine literary and historical composititons. `Cholan`s Poorva Pattayam` deals with the origin of the temple and gives an account of the folk-lore of the place . Saiva Literary pieces form the next instalment of poetry. The inscriptions, ranging for a few centuries give valuable information about the customs and manners that existed a thousand years ago. The `Thiruppugal` pieces of ArunagiriNathar give an account of the temples five centuries ago. The `Perur Puranam` of the Poet Kachiyappaa Munivar is a high literary poem. The numerous poems by various poets form the final collection of Literature about Perur. In the later period saint Santhalingar prayed lord Patteeswara lived in perur.
