The place was a forest in days of yore. Kovan, head of the Irula community was ruling this region. He cured the place and developed it. The place was subjected to famine once and the suffering of the people was too severe. Irulan, praying to Mother, installed simply a stone and began worshipping it as a deity to protect his subjects. Mother yielded to his prayers, brought rain and prosperity. Irulas began to worship Amman as their family deity and built a temple.

The temple is on the southern side of the main city. Koniamman is the guardian deity of this place. After the end of the Irula rule, one Ilangosar became the ruler of the place when a Chera king invaded the city. To prevent his march, Ilangosar built a fort and a tall mud space, installed the Amman as the guardian deity. The Amman is being worshipped as Koniamman.

The temple is under renovation at a huge cost.
